Happening in Nature - February
•Northern Flickers will start exhibiting territorial and mating behaviors this month. If you have
any problems with a Northern Flicker pounding away on the outside of your home, come by our store
for some bird friendly solutions!
• Keep those hummingbird feeders full as the male Rufous hummingbirds are returning to our area!
Female Rufous hummingbirds will follow their male compatriots in about 2 to 3 weeks.
• Anna's hummingbirds usually nest mid-month, so if you don't see as many hummingbirds at your
feeder, it just means you have nesting hummingbirds! How exciting!
• Watch the skies for Tree and Violet-green swallows returning this month.
• Great Horned Owls are establishing territory and attracting mates. Listen for their hoot!
• Noticing extra sap on your trees? Red-naped and Red-breasted sapsuckers are known to make sap
wells this time of year.
• There isn't much time left to check out the many raptors who overwinter in our area. Keep a look
out for Golden and Bald Eagles and Rough-legged Hawks.
• While February isn't exactly spring, the flowers are preparing for warmer weather! Spring bulbs should
be sprouting this month (daffodils, hyacinths and tulips) and you may see a few blooms.
• Watch those Crocuses and Angel's Tears bloom this month too!
